How rankings work
HANKO: Coffee Passport ranks cups by what the people who drank them logged: one person, one vote, recent cups weighted higher, and nothing ranked until two different people have rated it.
1One person, one vote
A cup is one drink at one cafe. If you log the same cup ten times, your ratings are averaged into one vote, so a regular can't outvote everyone else.
2Nothing is ranked until two people log it
A cup gets a rank only once at least two different people have rated it. Before that it is an early pick: you can see its score, labelled "from 1 person", but it is never numbered.
3Recent cups count more
Each rating's weight halves every nine months, so a cafe that changed its beans last year is judged mostly on what it serves now. City lists show cups logged in the last nine months.
4Small samples are held back
A cup's ranking score starts near the average for that drink and moves as more people rate it, so two perfect ratings can't leap over a cup that twenty people love. Brand-new accounts count half until they have logged a few cups.
5The number you see is the plain average
Scores on HANKO are the plain average of the ratings, out of 5. The order uses the ranking score above, so the #1 cup can show a slightly lower average than #2 when more people stand behind it.
6Private cups never count
Only cups logged as public or anonymous are counted. Anonymous cups count without a name, and the website never shows who logged anything: no names, notes or photos, only totals.
7No one can buy a place
Rankings come only from what people log. No cafe can pay to be listed, ranked or moved up, and test and banned accounts are left out.
A cafe's score is the plain average of every rated cup logged there. See them by city on Best cups or browse the map.
Help rank the cups near you
Most cups on HANKO have one person behind them so far. Log what you drink and you are the second vote that gets them ranked.
